"Don't leave home without it"

Q: What is it about?
A:
Well, unsurprisingly, it's all about how to survive when you leave home. Maybe you are going to university or college. Maybe you are renting a place of your own for the first time. Or even buying. Whichever, you need this book. So that your parents can't say, 'I told you so.'

Q: Why? What will it tell me?

A: Everything. Money, credit, debt, accommodation laws, your rights as a tenant, how not to get ripped off, tax, benefits, how to keep yourself healthy, your rights as an employee, registering with a GP/dentist, what's free and what's not, how to deal with a burst pipe/gas leak/fuse blow-out. And even what your rights are if you are arrested. (Not that you'll need that). Plus basic cooking stuff  - like how not to get food poisoning.

Q: What made you decide to write such an amazingly useful book?

A: My daughter was about to leave school and I suddenly thought, 'Help, she needs a book called The Leaving Home Survival Guide.' So I went to buy one and it didn't exist. So I wrote it. It's all the things that I have not got round to telling her. Or that I have told her and she has forgotten. Or that she didn't listen to because I get boring sometimes. Or that she didn't need to know before because she had her parents to do it for her. Real life. Independent living. Everything apart from the meaning of the universe.

Mind you, knowing how to deal with a burst pipe is a lot more useful than understanding the meaning of the universe.

The Bookseller Panel's Top Titles for August

Sarah Harbon, General Manager, Borders, Birmingham

"The Leaving Home Survival Guide is a book I wish Ihad been given as I was leaving school, and is really one of a kind. It explains bank accounts, tenancy agreements, cooking, the law, and many, many other areas, This is a book that will set anxious parents' minds at rest."

Sonia Benster, Proprietor, Children's Bookshop, Huddersfield

"The 'must have' book for every bolshy teenager this summer is The Leaving Home Survival Guide. The essential information contained therein will equip the emerging adult to deal with money, plumbing, work, safety and the law, plus much, much more. The tone is just right. Teenagers are urged to learn the art of the possible. 'Find out what you can or must do, and what you may not or do not have to do.' Parents can hand over this book, breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy the empty nest."

The Leaving Home Survival Guide has had loads more lovely reviews  -  but to be honest, they all say the same: DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!!!
